Encouraging preventative care and childhood development by providing incentives and a community to nurture the mental and physical well-being of our local families.

How it all started…

Over twenty years ago, Whitley County faced a troubling challenge—a record number of babies were being born with very low birth weights. In response, BABE of Whitley County was established to make a meaningful difference by empowering parents with the tools and resources to make informed decisions from the moment they discover they’re expecting.

BABE began as an incentive program designed to encourage pregnant women and families to participate in services and programs that support the health and well-being of infants and young children. By providing education and essential resources, the initiative aimed to reduce the county’s high rates of low birth-weight babies.

The results have been remarkable. As of 2019, Whitley County now has the second-lowest percentage of low birth-weight babies in Indiana, at just 5.8%.

But BABE’s mission didn’t stop there. While continuing its original incentive program, BABE has evolved to meet the changing needs of local families. Today, it’s not just a program but a community—a welcoming space where families, especially mothers, can connect, share experiences, and attend wellness classes. BABE is dedicated to ensuring every child in Whitley County has the best possible start in life.
